Tracking Global Climate Change Adaptation

ND-GAIN collaborates with several international peers on a working paper that aims to provide an overview of the grand challenges of adaptation tracking and proposes a comprehensive framework for adaptation tracking that is scaleable over time and across context.

ABSTRACT

The need to assess adaptation progress in countries, regions, cities, and the private sector is increasingly recognized by policy makers and scientists, but grand challenges have prevented substantive progress in tracking adaptation. This perspective aims to provide an overview of the grand challenges of adaptation tracking and proposes a comprehensive framework for adaptation tracking that is scaleable over time and across contexts. It does so by combining recent insights on the governance of adaptation, focusing on indicators of policy, polity and politics. In particular, it highlights how critical insights can be uncovered by systematically tracking over time, and discusses novel approaches to data collection and analysis to create a meaningful adaptation tracking framework.
