Hyun Kim is a Postdoctoral Researcher in the Notre Dame Global Adaptation Initiative (ND-GAIN). His current studies and publications encompass numerous important areas in social dimensions of climate change, planning and policy for sustainability (that includes risk, vulnerability, resilience, food security, climate and environmental justice), land use change and environmental planning, water resource planning, natural hazard mitigation, climate change adaptation, community resilience, sustainable development, spatial econometrics, longitudinal data analysis, GIS-spatially multi-criteria decision analysis, and content analysis. Hyun has conducted extensive preliminary studies on the socio-ecological dimensions of environmental change and extreme climate events, particularly in the context of vulnerability and resiliency to disasters and social responses in disaster-prone areas. Based upon these extensive preliminary studies, his dissertation explores how effectively community capacity and planning efforts mitigate vulnerability and enhance resiliency to natural disasters and climate change by focusing on spatial and temporal effects and the quality of local hazard mitigation plans and climate change action plans and their implementation. Hyun has several published works that have appeared in Society and Natural Resources, Tourism Geographies, Journal of Housing and the Built Environment, The Annals of Regional Science, KSCE Journal of Civil Engineering, International Journal of Water Resources Development, and Habitat International.
Hyun has also been actively involved in other projects related to the environment and humans in the context of urban redevelopment, residential mobility, and spatial justice. Based upon the main contributions of western theories application such as geography of opportunity, place attachment, and social justice to a different national context and the focus on community level, his studies address current urban issues in the context of prospects and challenges of sustainability and the nature and implications of socio-ecological shifts employing a wide range of analytical methods such as multilevel data analysis, spatial and temporal analysis, social network analysis, survey research methods, GIS-spatially multi-criteria decision analysis, and Remote Sensing-related methods.
Hyun Kim holds a doctoral degree in Urban and Regional Planning at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA with prior graduate and undergraduate training at Pusan National University, South Korea. During his planning and geography studies, he worked as a full time policy analyst and project assistant and conducted a variety of policy analyses to allow better to understand urban economic development, natural hazard mitigation, and climate change adaptation.
